Some speculation that Naughty Machinima is no longer free and you can only pay to upload.
It may happen. But as of today at 2pm there were no notes about that.
And I was able to upload a film like normal.

The problem i've been seeing during these "tests" or attempts to put the pay per use in place at Naughty Machinima. Is the free option, appears for "sign ups" but not at "login" for existing members.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the free option, will allow you to watch a limited amount of movies ( limited bandwidth ) . Also from what i can see, upload space for 2-3 movies per month. Then once a month has elapsed, these quotas get reset and you can go again.
So for producers who make more than 2 or 3 movies a month, maybe save NM for your favourites movies each month, and find alternatives as Ema suggests like kitty shack, or create a productions blog for yourself, and embed from places like Slutload.com.
It has to be said, the pay per use option seems great value, and allows you to upload all your projects in HD for example. However, i know some people can't direct RL funds to this sort of thing, and i hope we can help out and showcase all the options here.

Problem is.... Muze cannot continue to fund himself anymore, he has told me this several times.

Keep in mind this website has been around for 3 years almost, and problems didn't start happening until halfway through the 2nd year.
Should have been expected that this would eventually happen, that People would join, and join, and watch and watch, and upload, and upload.
Uploading isn't the MAIN problem, its funding yourself for almost 3 years with no help that is the problem.
Why say uploading isn't the main problem? No one here has contributed "OVER" 10% of uploads yet.......I contributed 4% myself, very little. Granted, its a small website and small community yeah, but if this were youtube, the website would have been down within a day from so many uploads.
I think for about 3 years, that 2340... now plus films I counted a day ago is average, and surprisingly the website has stayed around, especially given that it isn't funded very well at all.
As for uploads, from day one there should have been a upload limit, no offense to Muze, but he should have known his Bandwith limits, thats part of running a website, so taking on the risk without a Upload limit ultimately has cost him.
The cost of running a website can be very expensive to...... This is the kicker. Funding yourself independently without support was the MAIN problem.
This is why you can't blame anyone for uploading, no one has took upload 50% 29% 15% 11% of the uploads there.
I agree with everything Serenity has said in her post.
I told people who came to me saying that it went to a pay site that it would go back to being free, its been doing this for like 2 months now.
I agree with Serenity's post completely too.
Can't blame Muze if he doesn't have the funding to keep it free. We're all appreciative to him for giving us a place to show our work. And I'd rather see him charge than close Naughty Machinima down forever, if that's the only choice he has. The problem is, I don't think many will pay. A lot of people will just upload somewhere else.

ReplyDeleteIts hard to run a website for almost 3 years with no funds, I never owned a website but we all seen people struggle with them.
I'd challenge anyone to create a website like Naughty Machinima, do what you think is best, make it an upload limit, whatever but in the end it will be the same fate.
Maybe not sooner, but later one of the two.
If it died today, it lasted the average time a website probably lasts being independent.
I agree Ema, not many will pay at all, I think Muze is aware of that, and honestly, I don't think he will charge anyone, then again this is something I could be wrong at, but its just my guess and opinion.
We seen it go to pay/free/pay/free for awhile, we can't say its an Pay site til its offical by Muze.
Gotta appreciate him keeping it up for nearly this long, its quite amazing.
I don't think it will be 100% pay per use. As i said above. Maybe the limitations of the free account will mean Muze will never exceed bandwidth etc, and things can continue.
ReplyDeleteI do feel many producers will have to find alternatives though for their projects beyond the upload limits put in place. Bandwidth limits, and the fact you'll have to be logged in to watch a movie will mean less viewers in general too for our movies.
Naughty Machinima, was, and still is the very best site of it's kind. If you get everything right your movie will look stunning quality on the page there. We all have projects hosted there we're proud of, and we'd all hate the thought of it going. I hope some balance can be struck to keep it there for a long time to come.
I'm sure with what will still be possible at NM, along with other alternatives, new ideas, and new things emerging we can keep a lively SL porn scene running. :)
