  1. Only one of the nominated films features a scene showing shadows! lol
Does anyone here have ever tried to install and use Firestorm, or the latest versions of official Lindens Viewer? It's almost two year that Deferred Rendering, Projected Textures, and Depth of Field are out, and no trace of them in four of the five films nominated? It's just odd...
Don't want to be an advocate of this or that special effect, artistic value comes first of course... But this is "Special Effects" section, here I've seen a lot of nice editing effects but those should be judged in a "Best Edit" section, not here.
If you don't think Shadows have to be taken into consideration, please go take a look at Flickr, all of the best photographers that are changing the way SL content is being produced use them, and from this selection it seems that machinimators never heard of them :D

It's not true! I've myself submitted a movie I've shot last spring featuring Dynamic DOF, shadows outside and also in interior shots, two light sources in each scene

just watch it to have a look of the latest viewer technologies.
I consider this selection a real damage to the awards, showing like the porn community is stuck to 2009, unaware of the last two years advancements... And it's just unfair toward those directors that worked hard toward this direction, like Thorgal, Rysan and myself.

Just try installing a shadow enabled viewer and go around to see how SL looks like... Have fun

  2. Thank you for an excellent criticism Quinn. I appreciate you made your points without getting personal or mean. You are a class act and we'll think about how to put them into next years judging. Thanks.

  3. I have heard of Firestorm, and and the latest Linden Viewer. I have both. I used Kirsten's viewer on Pron for the shadow and depth of field scene i shot. I believe Emee used it too in the scenes she shot in Pron. So there is two movies with shadows. :DD

I had other visual effects in mind with Pandora's Box, and worked hard on it to produce them. My other film here is over a year old, released in early 2011. And personally, i think Emanuelle Courtois's movie is really creative too. I imagine she put in as much effort as i did. :)

  4. I reviewed the 4 movies (not Dee's) and still can't find shadow effects, but the count would be still very low even taking into account a single scene in Pron using DOF (not shadows).
It is A fact that the quality of imagery in films and pictures using extensively inworld effects and those who don't is impressive, check yourself! http://www.slporntube.com/video/465/Summer-Wine
The jury chosen in the "Special Effects" section should be aware of this fact, and recognise all or some the effects in play in a given scene, and (an idea of) the effort necessary to produce them, so my point is:

Given the very low use of inworld effects (1 scene spanning the length of 5 films), which criteria did they take into account? Serenity might know the answer, but I expect this answer to come from a member of the jury! (No suggestions here Serenity!)

Emmanuelle's film is really nice, but since her effects, and Serenity, are made in postproduction I think there's already the category "THE SEXIEST® EDITOR" for this kind of effects! If we score the effects obtained during editing in "Special Effects" category I see no point in having two distinct categories.

Shadow enabled viewers date back in early 2010 (first movie using them was shot September 2010
http://jennnnnajameson.blogspot.com/2010/09/first-adult-movie-with-sl-shadows.html ) and during 2011 they were considered mainstream. If you don't want to use them, you may, but don't run for "Special effects" please, unless the rules of this contest change!
